2 Ways To Get The Style You Want In Your Home

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you are having a new house built but you don't want it to look brand new, you have some options open to you. There are things that you and your builder can do that will make your house look like it has been around for a long time.

Look for Reclaimed Fixtures

One thing that you can do is to look for reclaimed fixtures. These are fixtures that were taken out of old houses before they were demolished. You can get everything from plumbing fixtures to cabinet pulls that way. You can get fixtures that are in the shape they were in before they were taken out of the old house. You can also get fixtures that have been refurbished so that they look like they would've when they were new. If you are going for a particular look, such as a Victorian-style home, then you can use this method to get actual, original fixtures of the era. One problem that you may run into when you are doing this is that original and reclaimed fixtures may cost more than you can pay. Part of that is that they are antique fixtures, another part is because they are original parts, and another part is that there is a lot of work that goes into refurbishing fixtures so that they are available to be sold. Refurbishing can include cleaning off old paint and patching any holes.

Look For Reproductions

Another option is to find a store that sells reproductions of the period or style you are looking for. For example, if you want to have a Craftsman style home, you can work with a store that sells fixtures that just look like the ones that would have been used in the period. Reproduction fixtures may be made out of different materials than the originals may be, however, for high-end reproductions, they are generally made out of the exact same materials and may even be made in the same way. For example, a faucet may be made by hand instead of being poured into a mold. The higher the quality of the reproduction, the more expensive it will be. But, you may be able to find a reproduction that you like that fits into your budget nicely.

If you are building a new house, you may want it to look like it has been around for a long time. Choosing the right fixtures can help you with that.

Construction Needs in Times of Disaster

I live in the middle of the desert, so I never thought that flooding would be a problem. However, a few months ago my town was hit with a huge storm. These freak storms are called "Hundred Year Storm" because the chances of them happening are once in a hundred years. Needless to say, no one was prepared for the aftermath--especially not the city sewage system. All this extra water had no where to go, and suddenly, I found my basement flooded. It wasn't a fun experience, but we dealt with it the best we could. Since then, I have spent a lot of time looking into different options for sewage, water lines, and other related things. We're now even looking into building a new house. This blog is the result of my ongoing research.
